Other: He was Triple Birch’s first big star. At two he was in contention for HOY honors but lost to the colt who would become his longstanding rival, Shawcrest. At three he dominated without Shawcrest, as the colt was out with a slight shoulder injury. Birchwood took the Derby and the Preakness, but Shawcrest returned from his injury for the Belmont and swept it away from the winning gray colt, robbing Birchwood of a potential Triple Crown victory. The summer and fall season was marked by the vicious rivalry, ending in a loss to Shawcrest in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Once again HOY honors went to Shawcrest, but come their collective four year old season Birchwood was ready. The two didn’t race against each other all year, Triple Birch kept their colt as far away as possible but there was no doubt that come the classic they’d be back to fight it out. Both colts stood undefeated in their four year old season when the Classic came, but Birchwood finally proved himself the winner in one of the closest classics of all time. As a sire Birchwood has never produced a son as good as he was, yet.
